Wednesday night saw me on the back of a 1000cc motorbike with no helmet and only in a singlet and jeans. Crazy stuff but that's nothing compared to the things you normally see on motorbikes during the days here in Thailand. Women holding babies, no helmets, no protective clothing, on the backs of motorbikes behind their husbandswith a toddler between the fathers' legs in the front. It's amazing how many family members can be squeezed onto one little bike. I was really scared on the back of the bike with Scott and squeezed the bejesus out of him before he let me get off so that he could breathe again. I can't say I enjoyed the exposure of being on the bike and probably won't be getting on one again anytime soon. Give me a car any day! Today we had the barman from the hotel we are staying at take us on a private tour around Phuket. His name is Wut (rhymes with 'put').Our first stop was to go "Elephant Trekking". Wut recommended this particular company (down the hill from the Kata View Lookout) because their 'treks' took you up to the top of a hill from where you could see some nice views over the island and ocean. Scott and I took an Elephant ride up through some bush land (30 mins for 700 Baht per person). I was even allowed to sit on the Elephant's neck just behind her ears. Her skin was rough and she had wiry hairs all over her head. She was beautiful, strong, cheeky and a little bit grumpy. I was initially against going for a ride on her because I don't believe in using animals for profit, but in the past the Elephants would have been used for logging so I thought carrying a couple of people around for half an hour would be nicer for her than pushing logs around with her trunk all day long. The view atop an elephant and a hill near Kata View Lookout, Phuket. Scott and I on our Elephant. After Elephant Trekking we went to see a Cobra Show (300 Baht per person plus tips). Elephant Trekking and Cobra Shows are a dime a dozen here in Phuket. Every road you drive down you are guaranteed to pass one or the other or both. If you are interested just stop at one, you don't need a booking or prior arrangement. Me with a Python. The Cobra Show was a laugh. There was a grandstand area with seating for about 40 people. Scott and I were the only ones there. Perhaps in the past they had scheduled shows during the day. Now it seems they hold shows only when someone turns up and pays. They still acted like the grandstand was full though. Cranking the music as loud as the speakers would go and giving out information over a microphone even though he could have talked to us without it. We were only about 6 feet away! The guy with the 'mike' kept yelling out "Be careful Jimmy! King Cobra most dangerous venom! Hiss! Hiss!" It was a crack up! The Cobra Show. "Jimmy" kissing a King Cobra. We made a stop at the Phuket Shooting Range as it was on the same property as the Cobra Show. Wut, Scott and I all grabbed a 9mm pistol (690 Baht each for 10 rounds) and had a round of target practice. I've been gloating about the fact that I got the best score of the three of us! Me, a girl, and only the second time I've ever shot a gun! Scott has always boasted about how good he was with guns in Tasmania and today I put him back in his box. Woo hoo! My target practice at Phuket Shooting Range. 59% accuracy! We went to Wat Chalong, a Buddhist temple south of Phuket Town. I've been interested in Buddhism for a while and have been thinking of becoming a Buddhist. I am a Catholic (christened and done my communion) but I am not practicing my religion, nor do I believe or agree with a lot of the philosophies and ideals of 'the church'. Buddhism is much more aligned with the things I believe in and they way I would like to live my life. The Wat was immaculately clean, full of marble and gold buddha's. An adjacent temple was where Wut, Scott and I made an offering to the Buddha. It felt like a very 'homecoming' moment for me.Me entering a temple for the first time. Lizzy, Hey sweetheart! Aw, I am so glad you are coming home. Even though it's not for the holidays, and your dad and I are bummed out that you can't make it, we do understand. It will be so good to see you. Dad is doing good. He is out playing golf right now. Trying to squeeze one more round of golf before winter and the ground is frozen. He is dedicated! I am off to lunch with Ms. Peabody and Mrs. Hutchinson. I will call you this weekend. Gretchen, Hey - No problem on the delay. I just needed the list before Friday so I knew how many people to tell Heather at Polished Uniforms to plan on measuring and fitting for uniforms on Monday and Tuesday. I did remember the employee handbooks, but not sure I have enough, so I will stop by to pick up more copies. We can sit down then and go over the employee security badge changes. Are you available on Thursday at 11:00am? I am out of the office tomorrow and Wednesday for the Diversity in the Workplace Workshop at Seminole Community College. Let me know. I will speak with tomorrow when I am on break from the workshop.
