"It's my teacher!" Jeffery said. - 10 fun things to do at your local retail store..... 1. Take shopping carts for the express purpose of filling them and stranding them at strategic locations. 2. Ride those little electronic cars at the front of the store. 3. Set all the alarm clocks to go off at ten minute intervals throughout the day. 4. Start playing Calvinball; see how many people you can get to join in. 5. Contaminate the entire auto department by sampling all the spray air fresheners. 6. Challenge other customers to duels with tubes of gift wrap. 7. Leave cryptic messages on the typewriters. 8. Re-dress the mannequins as you see fit. 9. When there are people behind you, walk REALLY SLOW, especially in thin, narrow aisles. 10. Walk up to an employee and tell him in an official tone, 'I think we've got a Code 3 in Housewares,' and see what happens. I pride myself on being patient when teaching driver education, something I have done for 30 years. I have encountered many, many students, who didn't seem to be able to hit the floor with their hat. But one incident was just too much. I had a sweet young thing behind the wheel for the first lesson of the semester. She had volunteered to go first and seemed ready to show the other two kids how well she could drive. We left the rural school and started toward town. As we approached the first stop sign, the young lady gave no sign that she saw it. We got closer, but she still did not slow down. Finally, I used the "teacher's brake" pedal, on my side of the car, to get us stopped. When I asked her why she didn't slow down to stop for the stop sign, she replied, "but, Mr. Smith, the speed limit is 35 ALL I am attempting to write a class whose string representation changes in response to external stimuli. While that effect is obviously possible via other means, I attempted this method first and was surprised when it didn't work, so I now want to know why :) ...I would expect the following behavior: In [130]: testObject =3D MyClass() In [131]: testObject.setEdit() In [132]: str(testObject) Out[132]: 'I, , am being edited' Unfortunately, this is what happens instead: In [130]: testObject =3D MyClass() In [131]: testObject.setEdit() In [132]: str(testObject) Out[132]: '' In other words, str() is _NOT_ apparently calling .__str__ as it's supposed to! However, calling __str__ directly (which, yes, you're not supposed to do) does work as expected: In [133]: testObject.__str__() Out[133]: 'I, , am being edited' However, expressions such as self.__str__ =3D aren't working for me, as above. Why not?
