Patrick Leahy of Vermont, said of Rehnquist: "One of the hallmarks of his tenure was his tenacious fight to preserve the integrity and independence of our federal courts. His commitment to the court and his passion for the law and for public service was extraordinary." Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican and committee member, said the high court "enjoyed renewed respect under Rehnquist's leadership." Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Republican, said Rehnquist "was an inspiration to me to be mindful of our duty to history and our place in preserving the strength of this great nation we serve." Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Rehnquist "led the federal judiciary with great dignity and clarity. ... Through it all, he displayed honor and conviction, a love of the law and a love for his country." Sen. Edward M.Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, said Rehnquist served "with the greatest distinction." He also noted that the president now faced the historic task of filling two openings on the high court. "We should proceed carefully and appropriately in filling these important vacancies," Kennedy said. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, said Rehnquist "has led the court with honor, dignity, character and -- as we have witnessed during his trials of recent months -- great personal strength. I have no doubt that when America's history books are reviewed years from now, his indelible imprint will be found on the court's history." House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California called Rehnquist "a strong advocate for an independent judiciary, particularly in response to recent threats to impeach judges for their judicial decisions and to strip federal courts of jurisdiction." SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp. unveiled Tuesday new computer keyboards and mice aimed at users looking for easier ways to type and for high-precision gaming and photo editing. In its annual refresh of its computer input hardware, the world's largest software maker introduced two new keyboards and six new mice. One keyboard featured a split configuration keyboard for more ergonomic typing that also includes a zoom slider bar to shrink or enlarge digital text or photographs. The second keyboard featured a new, concave design for the keys aimed at making it easier for users to type without straining their arms, fingers and wrists. Three new mice were introduced with laser-based optical components, which allows them to track movement with more precision and more smoothly, a feature that Microsoft says will be popular for games and graphics applications. The other three mice, which use optical tracking, featured new designs and technology improvements. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said it will continue to design, build and sell hardware for users' specific needs. "As people start to use their PCs more, they start to identify ways in which they want to use peripherals for different tasks," said Tom Gibbon, general manager at Microsoft's hardware group. Such specialization has helped keyboard and mice sales to outpace PC sales, Gibbons said, because users tend to replace such hardware over the course of a computer's lifecycle and also because they are buying keyboards to do specific tasks. The new keyboards are expected to retail for between $25 and $65, while the mice are expected to sell for $35 and $105, depending on their form and function, Microsoft said. "I wouldn't wear it. But it made it a lot easier for me to beat him today," Hewitt said. "I just couldn't lose to a bloke wearing a shirt like that." The 2001 champion and runner-up last year now plays Jarkko Nieminen, who became the first Finnish man to reach the quarters at a Grand Slam event with a 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Spain's Fernando Verdasco. No. 1 Roger Federer played Nicolas Kiefer of Germany later Tuesday, and 11th-seeded David Nalbandian played Italy's Davide Sanguinetti. It was ladies night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with No. 1 Maria Sharapova taking on fellow Russian and ninth-seeded Nadia Petrova, and fourth-seeded Kim Clijsters facing No. 10 Venus Williams.
