This story is about a mother dealing with her daughter's development. Although this child wasn't diagnosed with any disability, I thought maybe some could relate. Some of the mother's feelings are the same as I have felt...."when will she do this?" Just to ease the feelings of frustration.....let others know you're not alone when you sometimes compare (even though you aren't suppose to...it still happens to all of us!) your child to another you see or read about on the list. An average child would be just fine with me. I looked forward simply to witnessing that wondrous early profession from creeping to crawling to walking. The cause of developmental delays is one of the most difficult things to diagnose. Dr. Levi was especially interested to learn that I also had been late to walk and talk; since many experts consider rates of development to be partially hereditary, Rebecca's slowness was somewhat less worrisome. More important, Rebecca was alert, made good eye contact, slept well, babbled and had good muscle tone--all which pointed away from any kind of retardation. Like most slower-than-average kids, it was quite possible Rebecca would eventually catch up on her own. Although my husband took heart, I considered the glass half-empty, not half-full. Was Rebecca a victim of defective genes, or defective mothering? I tortured myself watching other moms with their kids and wondering whether I measured up. I tried enrolling Rebecca in a neighborhood gym class in an effort to stimulate her. Instead, I observed a half-dozen other babies have the time of their lives while Rebecca watched contentedly from the sidelines for the entire hour like a budding couch potato. I often walked home from the class in tears. As Rebecca passed her first birthday with little sign of progress on the mobility front, I found myself envious of my friends' eminently average children and (though I was ashamed of myself for it) sometimes angry at Rebecca. Hi Deb -- Thanks for asking. I'm healing and doing better everyday -- however my IBD is totally messed up right now (remission is gone). I'm trying my hardest to get back into remission. In Japan it does as it is considered polite to eat every single morsel of food on your plate - right down to the last grain of rice. The rule is: if you can see it - eat it! Gracias.
