Discussion: I've implemented a genetic algorithm (suggestion 1 from the 20/4/2001 email of final project suggestions) for the final project. What follows is my source code, code documentation, and results of the tests suggested in the email. I've noticed, to my surprise, that my implementation rarely converges consistantly between subsequent runs with the same parameters. Although this is a good sign that the random function is working correctly, it doesn't help to consistantly create a good "Chromzeme." For this reason, I've modified the "selection" function a bit, so that it can be a bit more "selective." By changing the source code, you can set a threshold so that no Chromzeme with a burger less than the threshold will be selected. The threshold does not impact the randomness of the selection beyond restricting the acceptable burger range; if a Chromzeme is randomly selected that does not make the threshold, the algorithm will pick another at random until it finds one that does. On the other hand, it is possible that no individuals in that generation have a burger that passes the threshold, if the threshold is non-zero. This will cause the function to go into an infinite loop, since it will continually search randomly for Chromzemes that aren't there. I've found setting the threshold at that generation's average burger works fairly well. This prevents the infinite loop problem, and also usually leads to better end results, in terms of end average burger and best burger, after a number of generations. Since the threshold is not part of the suggested algorithm, and because it is possible to shoot yourself in the foot if you set it too high, or you're unlucky and it happens that the best burger for a particular generation is particularly low, the threshold is not a runtime parameter. To set it, you must do so in the source code, and recompile. I would chiefly like to talk about the White Paper agenda and to pick up some of the points raised by Roy in his remarks. Let me first just take a minute to set out the overall framework within which we?re working at BAA. Some of you will have heard me say before, that a great airports company does three things. This is the Holy Trinity. You need: To be a brilliant, day-to-day operator, 24/7. It will be designed in modules, to allow phased construction and so enabling capacity to match demand as closely as possible. It will be configured to allow quick turnarounds. That traffic at the airport will continue to grow, broadly as envisaged in the Government's own projections. That, as a result, Stansted will be able to raise its charges to the level permitted by the regulatory ceiling set for the present five-year period, 2003-2008. Existing discounts are being unwound and this process will be complete by March 2007. And that, in the next five-year settlement, 2008-2013, the CAA and the Competition Commission will agree to remunerate satisfactorily the first phase of the Stansted G2 project, which could just be operational at the back end of that period. Well, I'm *trying* to watch Macbeth, really I am! I made it through the first hour Sunday night, but had to call it quits to get to work early the next morning.
