U.S. Senate votes against Medical Liability Reform
Legislation fails to reach 60 votes needed to reach Senate floor
Dear Bob Owen,
On May 8th, the U.S. Senate voted to stop a filibuster on medical liability reform, but fell short of the 60 votes needed to move the legislation to the Senate floor. While the legislation did not gain the votes needed to move S. 22 forward, the AMA’s Patients’ Action Network applauds the leadership of Majority Leader Bill Frist, MD, and Senators John Ensign, Rick Santorum and Judd Gregg for their dedicated efforts to stop America’s medical liability crisis.
Every American pays for the broken medical liability system, which adds $70 to $126 billion dollars to the costs of health care each year. Once again the U.S. Senate put special interest trial lawyers ahead of the overwhelming majority of Americans who support comprehensive medical liability reform.
Your continued support for medical liability reform is vital and the AMA’s Patients’ Action Network is committed to fighting for legislation that will fix our broken medical liability system and bring common sense in our courtrooms so that every patient can have access to physicians in emergency rooms, operating rooms and delivery rooms.
